January 15, 2016 – Well, the rain is now a distant memory, and with spirits held high, we saunter bravely into the warmth of Baja California Sur.

Time change please, as the group mimics perfect parking technique at Malarimmo’s RV Park in Guerrero Negro, I realize that perhaps I’m just in the way! I’ll just have a beer instead. All setup and off we go to Tony’s Taco stand….. He’s out of batter and by the time I drive up, the group is ready to mutiny! Never fear, in just a trice new batter is out and fish tacos are flying out of the hot oil and into the hungry hands of our intrepid explorers. It’s great, but there were no Camaronnes left for those with a need for prawn.

Some completely satisfied, and some hungry for the shrimp tacos, we nevertheless wandered purposefully down to the Casino/Market for a bit of shopping in the the renovated store. Lots of stuff bought, much wondering just what is was.

Rye Bread! a first for Guerroro Negro I’m sure. I bought the last 2 loaves of that!

Dinner out with the group at the on site restaurant was a hit for all. Good food, good company, good times.

The whale tour was special as it usually is; in January new borns and matings can be seen.

Soon enough Guerrero Negro is a distant memory, and the fabulous Rice&Beans Margaritas beckon. One of the best places on Baja for margaritas, and Oswaldo didn’t disappoint us at all. Good food, great margaritas. Same crew: what a blast!

San Ignacio is it’s usual sleepy self. Date cake, date shakes, lovely town square.

Mulege came, and it’s beach time. Downtime and a bit windy the first day. Second day was as nearly perfect as Santispac had ever offered: not too hot, just right for kayaking and paddle boarding. Dan inflated his Hobie kayak and showed us just how fast they can be!

It turns up that tons of wood was just waiting for us to relocate it. At a secret location along the way. Motorhomes and trucks bulged with the beach booty.

Wind greeted us on Santispac, but fun was all around anyway. Dan got his Hobie kayak inflated and proved that the pedal drive was way faster than paddling, any day.

Loreto showed us all just what a nice town it really is. A cruise ship was just leaving as we arrived, but the streets were very clean, and the locals happy and accommodating. A quick trip up the mountain for some glorious views and to look at the ancient Mission of San Javier. It couldn’t have been a better day’s outing. Del Borracho’s found us good burgers and fries, and BEER! What could be better for those travellers who prefer their food with a moo rather than a splash, or a cluck.

Diane made me promise to include the following photo of all the girls working hard on the laundry, so here it is:

Ubaldo and Giggling Dolphin put on a good meal, and the music from our usual trio was very entertaining, as ever.

So, Potrero is a little damp today. With the weather networks calling for flash floods, 16 intrepid adventurers waded their way into the pavilion at Potrero Regional Park for a quick rendezvous reception to hear about how nice it would be in a few days, on BAJA! High spirits were not to be dampened by a little drizzle.

Day 01 showed a little blue sky, just to start us off right. Tecate crossing was easy and drama free, the circuitous route back onto highway 3 south was handled with aplomb by all, and very soon we were:

A new highway, a new bodybreak location.

Sitting on the side of the road, wondering what all the fuss was about. Our old bodybreak place had been swallowed up by the new asphalt for a brand new road! This time the road was completely re-routed, and it easily cut off 10km from our journey, with smooth surfaces and wide shoulders, this is a real treat to drive now.

La bufadora. Thanks for the memories!

Ensenada flowed by, and our grocery stop at the famous Mexican Costco greeted us with a beautiful sunny sky, and then off to see Adolpho at Punta Banda for the night. La Bufadora was in great form, and Reimer just couldn’t get enough of the nice salty showers. Lots of laughs today.

Unfortunately, the evening showed us some really heavy downpours which made the road back to the highway a mess. Thankfully, loaders and backhoes had already made short work of clearing a pathway for us by the time we bounced by the piles of red mud.

All these nice clean rigs were to keep some of that mud, making us all look like the seasoned adventurers that we were about to become.

Happy Hour at the gas station.

Pemex never looked so safe, or wet.

Well, it got a bit more wet along the way. Fields and roads underwater, the rich red soil for the agricultural landscape was being washed away by tremendous downpours that surely will affect the area around San Quintin for some time.

We knew it was raining all through the region, and so had made arrangements for a different campground this night. As we arrived at the road into Los Olivos, is was immediately apparent that none of us would make it down there unscathed: the nice red mud was a foot deep for the entire length of the “road”.

Plan B. We left all the group at the Pemex to go see if El Pabillon was usable for our first beach day. Well….. the road in was fine, and Jose (the caretaker) assured me that it was fine as long as we kept to a certain, very precise pathway. Well….. stuck…stuck, and STUCK, in the mud.

So now you know why we spent another fine happy hour at a gas station. Thanks Pemex for having so much room, and such an understanding of travellers needs. The swimming pool needs some work, however.

I wonder what’s in this cave?

Morning came and the puddles were still…. wet, so off we went to the high desert of Catavina, and Rancho Santa Inez.

Dry, and sunny, we basked on sunshine, climbed up to the cave paintings, had another happy hour, and then all of us wandered off to Oscars place to have a traditional comida. All good, a little cool, NO RAIN!

RV-ing on land and sea…..

The RV’s are ready to go and we picked up our pre-ordered fresh cinnamon buns from the cafe at the corner of the RV Park. On the road at 8 am. with a long driving day in front of us and our cinnamon buns waiting to be devoured we leave La Paz behind and make our way north to Puerto Escondido on the Sea of Cortez.

Our day went well and we arrived to the Marina around 2:30 where we parked for the night. This is a lovely relaxing place with the bay full of sail boats. We walked, sat, read, and had happy hour and dinner at home tonight.

Puerto Escondido, morning glory!

At 5 pm the owner of nearby Hotel Tripui came by with menus and an invitation and a ride to dine at their restaurant but we declined. Maybe if he had come by earlier we may have accepted.

It was a nice night, the water was glistening and the fish playful.

Mulege

It rained this morning and first thing Dom changed one of our RV tires. Our vehicles are well used and eventually things like tires wear out. Dom checks them regularly and better to change in a parking lot than on the road side.

It was a short driving day today with the rain stopping at noon about the same time we arrived to Mulege and Hotel Serenidad RV Park for 2 nights camping in their full serviced Rv Park including a pool and access to use of the hotel lobby and sitting areas.

On route we came across a vado (a low point in the road where flood water crosses and flows away) or in some cases doesn’t flow away causing a huge puddle preventing vehicles from continuing. Luckily for us a local was on the scene and directed us across the safest way. Often you just have to sit and wait for the water to flow away and sometimes the army arrives and helps people through.

The lineup of beaches and looked tempting and we all looked longingly at Playa Santispac where we stayed on our southerly trend.

We arrived to Hotel Serenidad in Mulege around noon. The spaces were all available for us; the group set up and had lunch then we were off on a driving tour of town taking in a visit to the mission then a walk around town to do banking and shopping.

Back at the Park we walked on the beach, rested, had showers and met at 5 pm for happy hour before loading into the van to go to town for dinner to Las Casitas. A perfect evening was had by all; we were all impressed with Javier’s efforts at making his place special for his customers. It is decorated differently every time we go there.

Mulege another date palm oasis got its name from the Cochimi language meaning “large ravine of the white mouth”. It has been the recipient of numerous tropical storms including Odile leaving the town and area in a mess. Mexicans have such spirit to pick up and put things back repeatedly and go on with life in a cheerful manner.

Mulege Mission.

Our next day in Mulege included a tour to the prison and Loma Linda, lunch at La Candila for very delicious hamburgers (and other good food). Since Odile we can no longer get to the lighthouse which used to be a good hike to the top for a very spectacular view of Mulege.

Some shopping was done and a last stop at the bakery for sweet treats.

What’s happening over there, Carl?

Back at the park the kayak trio(Stu, Liz and Carl) carried their kayaks across the airfield and launched their kayaks at the mouth of the Mulege River and the Sea of Cortez. They had a good lengthy tour into town then back and before finishing they landed at the sight of the lighthouse and climbed up to its top then back to the park.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6238" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/IMG_2736-300x225.jpg" alt="Las Casitas was a great hit.
A margarita happy hour at the Hotel Serenidad marked our last night in Mulege and for Stuart marked the last of his margarita adventure for a while because a couple too many can and will do you in as many people discover. I always say more than one margarita can make you lipless and more than two can make you legless.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6239" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/IMG_2762-300x225.jpg" alt="Oh yeah.
Return to Guerrero Negro

A long driving day brought us to our second stop in Guerrero Negro but this time we stayed at Mario’s full service RV Park and Restaurant. We arrived to find another caravan staying here as well. The park is spacious with lots of sites so no problem plenty of room for us all.

Almost immediately the ladies are out gathering shells, not from the sea nor the ocean but from the piles of scallop shells at the back of the parking lot. This a good fresh sea food restaurant and shells are discarded on site.

It was windy here but we busied ourselves and later all dined at Mario’s palapa restaurant. The full compliment menu had something for everyone.

Carol shows off her fabulous poncho, at Mario’s.

Thank goodness for wind sometimes otherwise it can be very hot. The wind settled and we had cool night for sleeping. The morning was cool, calm and sunny.

Guerrero Negro is not a pretty place because vegetation does not grow around here due to the high salt content in the soil but it is an important place because Scammons lagoon has vast tidal flats full of salt which produces enough salt to supply Mexico, USA, Canada and Japan.

Back to the beach.

It was a good driving day with some wind blowing up in the late morning but the highway was fairly quiet and the group could ease up and take more space on the two lane highway.

At 1 pm we reached Bahia de Los Angeles (Bay of Angels) and Daggets RV Park where we spent 2 nights on the beach.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6240" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/IMG_2802-300x225.jpg" alt="The full moon competed for attention around the campfire.
After lunch the group went on a driving tour of the village taking a stop at an overlook for an awesome view of the bay on the Sea of Cortez, one of the most beautiful bays in Baja then to a grocery store and back to the beach for a day in the sun. We spent the afternoon walking, reading and visiting but no kayaking today because the wind is up.

As I looked out over the bay I saw a sailboat, one good sport in windy weather. This sleepy fishing village has a beautiful setting right on the shore of the sea of Cortez where one can enjoy lovely sunrises, sunsets, kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding, fishing, and watching dolphins and whales.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6241" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/IMG_28081-300x225.jpg" alt="Dennis samples the pan dlce at the bakery down the street from the museum. Yum.

Whale sharks are born and live in this bay as in other areas like Santispac and La Paz. They are large tame beasts that are the focus for many tours and swimming with whale sharks are a big tourist draw in places like La Paz. Dom & I saw one last season at Playa Santispac. You recognize just below the surface by their black and white domino looking back and fin sticking out of the water like a shark but the rest of the large body is whale like.

We enjoyed sitting around a fire. The guys used up the last of the wood they were carrying. Madera wood burns hot and makes good coals. I made up foil packets of potatoes and vegetables and roasted on the coals for half an hour; enough for a couple of meals for Dom & I. At bedtime Dom put another half barrel on top of our fire and left it overnight and through the next day.

We woke up to sunny skies and calm water. The kayakers (Dom & Mike, Stuart & Liz and Carl) headed out for a tour around the islands. Linda and I took the dogs for a long walk along the beach. Kacey read in the sun, Harold & Carol walked on the beach, Dennis walked toward the lighthouse and took photos. Dennis always had his camera. George & Gail, Chuck & Shirley walked and enjoyed visits in the shade.

After lunch we went on an excursion to town to see the museum (one of the best little museums I have seen) and Casa Diez a small onyx chapel; a representation of the original one that was destroyed in the ’70’s. We stopped at a new bakery and at Lucy’s Gallery. We met Patrick an 80 year old man who works with leather and makes honey. He tells a good story of where he lived and came to be here. He knows the area and full of local knowledge about fish etc.

We bought honey and a few leather trinkets were bought by the group. We will keep him on our tour excursion of this town.

Back at the beach each busied themselves and at 6 pm. our friends Antonio and Betty came to have happy hour with the group. They brought a couple of Canadians who are renting a house from Antonio. The evening cooled down but Dom soon warmed things up with an open fire. He added wood to the coals from the night before and a new fire started immediately.

Dom and I ate our dinner in front of the fire and later a couple of the group came out to sit around the fire and visit until bedtime.

Our longest driving day is in front of us as we say goodbye to the Sea of Cortez and beaches for awhile.

The weather was good and with a few body breaks the day passed. On route we came across a bus on a mountain curve. It had broken wheels and or axle, something like that and luckily it rested against the rock wall rather than the cliff side. The police were on the scene and further along we saw a tow truck and a replacement bus their way.

We arrived to Colonia Vicente Guerrero around 3:30 and Baja Fiesta Restaurant where dined and spent the night dry camping in their large parking lot.

Before our hosted dinner at the restaurant the group had hot showers and rested.

A fun night and a good meal was had by all.

Baja Fiesta dinner was excellent, thankyou Cecilia!

The next morning Cecelia and her family fixed breakfast for those who wanted; Dom & I, and George & Gail and Chuck enjoyed Starbuck’s coffee and breakfast.

Valle de Guadalupe

We are now on day light savings so it was a short nights sleep. Never the less the group was ready and we set off early to our last stop of the tour, Sordo Mudo in Valle de Guadalupe.

The group maneuvered very well through Ensenada and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the wine valley, then before too long we arrived to Sordo Mudo a Christian based residential school for deaf children in Mexico. The campground fee is a donation to the school.

I’ll take a small keg, please.

After lunch we were off to LA Cetto for a wine tour and tasting. Being Sunday afternoon we joined the throng of tourists; Mexicans and a bus load of tourists from San Diego. Dom met one couple- game show winners who won a vacation which included the wine tour.

It was a lovely afternoon to taste wines and enjoy the scenery and the garden potted and beautifully treed grounds of the winery.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6233" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/IMG_2934-300x225.jpg" alt="The view from up on high.
Back at the park, which is surrounded by vineyards, we organized a last happy hour together. The group prepared last meals with food that is not allowed over the border and prepared extra fresh foods and meats for later because some food is allowed if cooked or chopped as in vegetables.

The fire dancer made its last appearance for those interested in sitting out.

Last day of Tour

Day 29 and here we are at the end of the tour. A morning filled with mixed feelings as the group said goodbye to new friends and leave Baja behind.

The border crossing went well with only 20 cars in front of us. By 10- ish every one was on their way to wherever. Safe Travels all.

PS, if anyone from the group took a nice photo of us that will be suitable for the back of our books please send them to us. Thank you.

Now, here’s the group, sunburned and ready for a rest. It’s been a real treat having you all along for the ride.

Adios Baja Amigos!

Los Cabos

Los Cabos (the capes) is the municipality that encompasses the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo (the municipal seat), as well as the Resort Corridor that lies between the two.

Our days spent in Cabo San Lucas were full of activity with everyone having a great time.

The Glass Blowing Factory was interesting even though there was no glass being blown on our visit. Carl got too excited over the perfect piece he ended up in a juggling act with a shelf full of glass cups and ended up breaking the best one but he still had second best which now was the best because the first best got broken. Did he buy the second best?

The drive around the town and harbor was an eye opener as the group got to see the resorts and tourist attractions beside the everyday simple style of the Mexicans.

Yes, they Do serve margueritas here!

Vagabundos del Mar Restaurant was an incredible night for all of us; food was delicious, the best margaritas in Baja, Peter our host was gracious and in tune to the group, the music was perfect for dancing and we did. Everyone danced, Chuck showed us how and danced his pants off. We laughed and had fun together.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6143" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2541_2-300x225.jpg" alt="Dance!. DANCE! Vagabundos will always remembers you.

Artesanos is a neat place to wander around in; long aisles of ceramics, pottery, glass and much more. Most of us found something.

San Jose del Cabo day trip was a nice time; lunch, art walk, walking & shopping and a look through the Mission.

Latitude 22 Roadhouse Restaurant was better than it has been; Carl & Kacey finally got their hamburger and the group got to see the very interesting decor. This is where you can buy “no bad days ” t-shirts and stickers.

Harold, AKA Rocketman, tries to reach the moon.

Playa Santa Maria was fun; Stu & Liz, and Mike snorkeled and swam, Carl bobbed around in the blowup floatie, Kacey waded and Linda and Dom enjoyed the sites from their chairs under the beach umbrellas.

Gail and I were dizzy girls today, from too much sun or too much in air-conditioning so we stayed home out of the sun this morning. Gail’s cheerful personality will be missed on the beach. She loves to chat up the Mexicans using her quite developed Spanish speaking skills.

The weather has been very hot 35 degrees C( over 90 F).

Everyone wants to hug the movie star.

Medano Beach for Hosted Happy Hour was a very social and fun time; good food & refreshments, shopping from the beach vendors and visiting with other tourists. Linda and I were gaga over a 3 month old Yorkshire Terrier.

Stu & Liz kayaked to El Arco (the arch) as we all watched until they were out of sight. They saw some sea lions hanging around the lands end rock.

Mike and Linda let Iguanas crawl on them and posed for photos.

Surf Beach for a night

Leaving Cabo San Lucas we swing north along the Pacific Ocean to spend a night at Los Cerritos Surf Camp.

On the way we stopped at the Blanket Factory where the group checked out blankets, table cloths, purses, hoodies and much more. Vivianne demonstrated the loom as she already had a blanket started on it. Quite slick as she swung her arms to one side then the other, moved her feet on paddles then moved a string of yarn into place with a wooden bar and voila, one more piece of the blanket done. She showed us one of her blankets that took her months to finish. The more intricate designs are certainly more work with the many colors that make up the picture or pattern.

Just before lunch we arrived to our stop for the day; dry camping in the parking lot of the Surf Camp. We do have access to wi-fi, pool, hot tub and beach. The bar/ restaurant is a comfy spot to sit and wi-fi, visit and look out at the surf or have a meal or drink.

Harold, Liz and Stuart, and Carl swam in the pool, while the others sat and visited. Carl walked the beach from end to end then sat and watched the surf. Carol showed me a couple of shells she found on the beach.

Everyone including the dogs hit the beach at some point in the day. Only Kacey avoided the sun today and sat and read in the shade.

A lovely breeze came off the shore today making a hot day more comfortable.

Tonight the group went for a hosted meal in a near by small town, Pecadero in a back street patio restaurant called Las Pasaditas. This authentic Mexican place and meal is always a favorite with our groups.

The group feasted on their choice from the menu and after dinner Carl, Mike and Stu walked to a nearby tienda(store) to buy ice cream treats for all of us. The Mexicans were starting to arrive for their meals so we left our tables and enjoyed our ice-creams beside the van. A memorable experience for us all.

Carol: Hat check anyone?

  La Paz (the peace)

La Paz is an important regional commercial center with an approximate population of 250,000. Besides visiting the city people come to enjoy the marine wonders of the islands. Kayaking, snorkeling and diving are popular and there are tours to take you swimming with the amiable whale sharks.

On our way to La Paz we stopped at Todos Santos(all saints) for a few hours to walk around and visit Hotel California, the Cultural Center, the Church, do some shopping, have coffee and choose from numerous great places for lunch.

I enjoyed a walk around Hotel California with some of the group and reminisced about another time many years ago when Dom & I dined, danced, listened to live music and took Salsa lessons. For today 2 couples enjoyed margaritas and lunch here.

Leave it alone Mike.

Just before arriving into La Paz we fueled up the RV’s then made our way through the city making a stop at Walmart for groceries etc. We arrived to Campestre Maranatha RV Park by mid afternoon. The weather was hot and the very efficient group set camp and had some quiet time.

Dan & Lisa’s group was here and after our group settled both groups met for a happy hour. There were thirty-one of us including Mike & Kelly from Kansas who promote Baja Amigos at their Trade Show. When the show is finished they RV in Baja and eventually we all meet up like here and in Cabo San Lucas.

Thanks, Roland!

Roland sang, and played his guitar and harmonica as the group visited and imbibed and partook of the many tasty foods that Baja Amigos brought to this festive occasion.

Our second day in La Paz; Dan & Lisa left this morning leaving Dennis behind to finish the tour with us. A couple who dropped off in Dec /15 are now rejoining the tour with Dan making too many RV’s for Dan & Lisa so our group is very happy to have Dennis with us.

The laundry angel came by this morning to pick up our bags of dirty laundry which will be returned later this afternoon.

Our excursion this morning took us to Ibarra’s Pottery, a family run business. The unique designs appeal to a lot of people. The group enjoyed Vicky’s presentation of the pottery making procedure then looked around the show room and made decisions on which pieces they wanted. Each piece is different but they all look beautiful together as in a table setting.

After the pottery shop we took a drive to the Panteon overlook then a drive along the 5 mile long malecon.

Back at the park it was time for lunch and a quiet afternoon and pool time. The group got together for happy hour around the pool then all of us went out for dinner to Las Magueyas. The evening and meals were ideal.

The third day; an already warm morning promises to be a hot day. Nothing but hot days this tour which is what we expect in Mexico. The group had an excursion in town to walk around and see the sights such as the Cathedral, Gallery, Cultural Center, Hotel Yeneka “the most unique Hotel in the world”, La Perla Hotel which brought back memories for Chuck who visited it many years ago, and the many shops. We all had lunch at La Perla Restaurant then walked some more. Some of the group finished off their walk in town with an ice cream treat.

You run into the same people all the time, in La Paz.

Two couples went off on their own for a while this afternoon. La Paz is a big enough city with lots to see and do; enough to keep anyone busy for a few days.

Back at the Park we found more RV’s had arrived, more Canadians whom we met and chatted with. The rest of the day was open to whatever transpired.

Little town with a big history.

We woke up to calm warm sunrise and the sea was silky smooth and glistening in the sun.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6099" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2357-300x225.jpg" alt="Rivera del Mar Campground.
Today we left the beach and Bahia Concepcion. A short journey took us to Loreto on the Sea of cortez, for two nights camping at Rivera Del Mar.

We arrived at noon and after lunch the group went on an excursion to the beautiful Zocalo (town center) for a walk around town taking in the sites along the tree lined streets that offer restaurants, shops, cafes, hotels, museum, mission church -the oldest in Baja.

Loreto is an attractive town full of activity and interesting sites. There are several 18th century buildings which are considered historical monuments. They are not hidden away but are part of the down town area as is the Jesuit museum and Mission Church. The two oldest missions in Baja are here; the oldest in Loreto and the second oldest in nearby San Havier.

World famous cave painting sites are nearby here as well.

Loreto was the first permanent settlement in the California’s including the USA. It was the capital for 132 years. Growing up from a sleepy village to the popular tourist attraction it is today.

The malecon (the water front) is fairly new and great for a stroll.

Everything is within walking distance from the RV Park.

The group had a nice walk about town then some met Dom for a ride home while a few walked home. Back at the Park the afternoon was spent leisurely; showering, wi-fying, resting, reading and visiting. Our laundry chores were in the hands of the laundry angel. When RV Parks are full as it is here wi-fi connections are very poor and sometimes only occasionally I get on with my dinosaur on which I like to type the blogs. I’m not into blogging on a cell phone size keyboard which would likely get the blog out there but I would have gone mad by then.

Evening arrived and Dom & I strolled into town to see what we could see; checked in on a couple of our favorite spots and decided on pizza and a glass of wine at Mezzaluna. It was a lovely warm evening to be out and about.

When we arrived back about 8 pm the Park was quiet; one set of lights were on, another Baja midnight for the group.

Mike Makes Mush out of ice cudes on the nearly auromatic Marguerita maker.

This morning was warm and setting up for a hot sunny day. Dom took the group on an excursion up a mountain to San Javier the site of the second oldest Spanish mission in Baja. San Javier was initially founded by a Jesuit missionary in 1699. Today a small village of people keep the area alive and the once deserted now restored church is maintained by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.

San Javier mission. Impressive monument.

The group was impressed with the beautiful church with its well preserved baroque appearance and golden altar. The church is well worth the drive up the mountain and the ancient olive tree in the back yard got just as much awe from the group.

It is a nice place to wander around.

Stuart & Liz went kayaking today and enjoyed their exploration. Liz came back with shells to share with the ladies.

Back in Loreto the group visited Conchitas Curios, Gifts and Craft Shop; this is a really classy place to root around in and find that special something. Shirley did not find chili pepper pot holders which are on her list. Even if you don’t buy it is a lovely place to visit. Conchita is friendly and helpful. A few of us found choice items and then went for lunch. Everyone walked back to the Park for a nice quiet afternoon.

Tonight was our hosted Fiesta Night Dinner at Giggling Dolphin. Food was good, music was good, and the company was definitely good; we enjoy each others company.

Giggling Dolphin, and Uvaldo, never fil to impress.

Farming Belt of Baja

We are definitely into the hot weather; warm mornings and evenings and hot afternoons.

We had a later departure today so the group enjoyed a leisurely morning. A short drive took us inland to the farming belt of Baja and Ciudad Constitucion. Oranges are in season and we spotted fields of broccoli.

Ciudad Constitución is the fourth largest city in Baja. Growing up from a ranch at a crossroads where people started gathering it grew into the commercial hub and travel stop it is today.

It is the gateway to near by Magdalena Bay where whales come to mate and give birth. The bay is also known for fishing and kayaking.

We arrived to Cuidad Constitucion just before noon and stopped for an hour at Super Ley to grocery shop for the next 4 days. After today we will be beach camping for two nights so we need to be supplied. Also we will be having a pot luck and campfire on the beach.

Just a few kilometers down the road we arrived to Palapa 206 Motel and full service RV park. Everyone settled in and enjoyed the hot afternoon.

Liz bought a big bag of oranges and shared them with everyone before she juiced the rest. A perfect day for a drink of freshly squeezed oranges. Thank you Liz.

We had a really nice happy hour at Stuart & Liz’s, and Harold & Carol’s RV. Mike the owner of Palapa 206 was not home otherwise he would have been here visiting with the group. Mike’s dogs came over to play with our dogs.

It’s off to the beach we go

A fog set in just after everyone was up and around. We had an early start today because of a longer drive and we want to get to the beach as early as possible. Our destination being Tecolote for 2 nights of beach camping (boon docking).

The fog burned off before too long and the day became another hot one.

The roads were busy and we encountered construction just north of La Paz. The construction had come a long way since our January trip.

Tecolote beach patrol.

Playa Tecolote (meaning the owl) is located at the tip of a short peninsula which juts into the Sea of Cortez. A beautiful place for camping; warm days and cool nights with water perfect for swimming and kayaking. Many RVers spend their winters here. On the way to Tecolote we pass by Pichlingue the ferry terminal where ferries travel to and from Topolobampo and Mazatlan on mainland Mexico.

We arrived at the beach just passed noon and after lunch Stuart launched his kayak. He & Liz disappeared around the point and found a quiet spot to snorkel where they found a young sea lion hiding amongst the coral reef. I walked along the beach with Harold & Carol, the others lounged and walked. Dom, Kacey, Shirley & Linda always took time to read and had a book swap.

It’s blue against red in the great kayak race!

Happy hour was a friendly chatty time as usual and just after sunset we all went off to our Rv’s for dinner. A few sat together later again; the night was lovely. Dom & I enjoyed a quiet evening outside as we stared at the stars and talked about sleeping outside in our chairs then thought better of it once Dom realized it wouldn’t last because eventually he would have to turn on his tummy.

On RED Team, Harold and Stu prepare the kayak.

It’s a long way back to shore, Eh Mike?

The next morning as we enjoyed an early walk with our dog Grady on the beach we met Stu & Liz also enjoying a walk with their dog Stitch. When we returned Stu & Mike came looking for Dom and his shovel to help someone stuck in the sand but by the time they got there the vehicle was out.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6140" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2433-300x225.jpg" alt="I just didn't want to leave, but George insisted. With a tow rope!

The wind that came up during the night had settled and after breakfast the kayaks were launched. Just about everyone had their turn with the kayaks and the stand up board. Carl had lots of practice getting in and out of his light as a feather single kayak. Talking about falling out of kayaks; Dom flipped Grady and I out of our kayak as he was trying to get in. Normally he gets in first then I do but for some reason we changed it and it worked against us. Harold didn’t want to miss out on an experience so he tipped out of the single kayak. The ladies are usually handy with their cameras so no doubt our mishaps are recorded.

Idle Kayaks await adventurers.

Dom and I took Grady out with us and just before reaching shore we put him in the water so he could practice swimming. He did well last year but hasn’t had much opportunity for swimming since last season. He did well.

Stitch swims well and loved chasing his ball into the water. Sophie the puppy is socializing really well and enjoys trying to keep up with the other dogs.

Stitch says “What about me Dad? “
Grady says “whats going on, is there food?”

Mike was a riot as he fished; he kept walking into the water until all we could see of him was his head, eventually he reached a sandbar. He didn’t catch anything but it was fun.

Pictures of Mike have been confiscated by the Mexican fishery and wildlife department, because it sent too many people in over their head.

The ladies did some shell picking and shared ideas about what could be done with them.

The dogs had a wonderful time running and playing in and out of the water.

Water play is all finished, the kayaks and life jackets are drying and we are all enjoying a lazy end to our afternoon in the sun.

Happy hour was fun then around 6 pm the pot luck food started arriving and we all feasted. George treated the group to a most delicious tres leche cake. After dinner we relaxed around the fire pit.

An early night for all.

*

Sierra de la Laguna Mountains

Another lovely morning and we leave the beach for Rancho Verde RV Haven in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains.

Dom caused a little excitement on the way off the beach this morning. He got stuck in the sand. George unhooked his truck from his 5th wheel and came to the rescue. Not much effort and we were out. The group hooted and clapped. The local dog responded to the joy of the group and started running around and gave Dom a lick on his ear as Dom unhooked the tow rope. Every camera in the group, including mine took photos of this momentous event.

*

Back on the road the journey went smoothly. Saturday morning found La Paz fairly quiet and it seemed in no time we arrived to El triunfo. El Triunfo is a former mining town nestled in the Sierra de la Laguna. We stopped here for a walk around town to take in the sites ( smelter towers of the old mine, church, piano museum which was closed, artesian shops) and have brunch at the EL Triunfo Cafe. Bunch was not a disappointment and we also bought bread and treats from the bakery at the front of the restaurant. The sour dough bread and the scones and cinnamon buns are irresistible.

San Antonio is another small town we passed through today. It has the honors of being the capital of Baja for 2 years.

Around 1 pm we arrived to Rancho Verde, a refreshing place to stop for the day.

            Boon docking on the beach

The morning was clear and sunny as we circled up for our pre driving meeting. Todays journey stays on the Pacific coast; we passed through scenic Santo Thomas Valley, and the busy communities of San Vicente, Colonet, Vicente Guerrero, San Quintin and Lazaro Cardenas.

There was lots of traffic today but the 210 kms slipped by easily as we meandered from good four lane to two lane with shoulders to two lane with no shoulders and climbed and descended a couple of mountains. Body breaks were chatty and fun and got us off the road and out of our rigs to walk and visit.

We arrived around 1pm to Fidel’s El Pabillon Beach Camp in Lazaro Cardenas, our stop for the day. Fidel met and greeted us with a photographer in tow. The Rv’s and the group were all in photos with Fidel for promotions of his campground. Who would not want to be here?

Fidel’s modelling agency, part 1.

The remainder of the day was used to walk the miles of beautiful beach, a couple of the ladies collected a few shells, others relaxed in the sun. The pets,:Grady, Stitch and Sophie had fun running on the beach- a dogs dream place.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6057" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2214-300x225.jpg" alt="Shells are like gold. Apparently the one with the most shells, wins.

At sunset the guys lit the fire with Fidel’s assistance and before long the coals were perfect for roasting hotdogs. Mike and Linda shared a pot of delicious beans with corn, others shared various condiments that go well with hotdogs. Fidel joined us for hot dogs and a glass of wine.

The evening was just pleasantly cool but we enjoyed the warmth of the fireside as we visited and laughed the evening away. The sky was incredible; Harold brought out IPad with the Star view program, very interesting.

I can’t waist good coals so I wrapped a yam in foil and sunk it into the coals. My yam cooked as we sat and chatted; lunch for tomorrow.

Good fire, good food and good fun.

Boon docking in the high desert

We woke up to fog. Dom & I went walking on the beach and watched the sun rise through the fog. The fog burned off with the sunrise and the day heated quickly and we had a clear sunny day for traveling.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6058" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2228-300x225.jpg" alt="Bo-one's here, but us amigos. Wandering the beaches looking for gold.

Todays journey took us to Rancho Santa Inez in the high desert of Catavina which is about half way between east and west of Baja. It is a small town on the highway. It always seems quiet here but the local economy depends on tourism and a first-rate hotel provides a nice stay for those interested in the cave paintings, boulder fields and cacti forests and other plant life. Hiking up the huge boulders for fantastic views is a fun thing to do.

The boulder fields, like a vast rock garden, were created by molten material cooling slowly beneath the earth’s surface. The boulders we see now were masses of granite rock that fractured vertically at the surface, over time the fractures weathered by water and freezing temperatures causing the rock mass to break into huge chunks which became further eroded which produced the rounded boulders making such an impressive landscape.

Boulders, baby!

The group is accustomed to the roads now and travel well. The highway today was mostly quiet with very light traffic which is always a welcome occasion.

We had a couple of body breaks; one at the Onyx shop was a great hit with the group. We all bought something but Liz and I really wanted a turtle. There always were turtles and I guess they sold out but the Senora said there would be turtles in March. We will see.

About noon we arrived to Rancho Santa Inez just south of the town of Catavina.

The group had time to select a spot, set camp and have lunch before meeting at the van for an excursion to the cave paintings. They all looked smart with their hiking shoes and sticks. Off they went for a short drive and short hike. The cave paintings were impressive as were the trees and plants around the hike and cave. The views were impressive.

The cave paintings were created by indigenous people living here several thousand years ago. These petro-glyphs are at least 6000 years old.

The sun was very hot and thankfully for a breeze the day was comfortable. Everyone met for a happy hour before heading out for dinner at the local restaurant for a basic traditional meal.

Ralph stopped by for a visit; he and his wife spend their winters here and he always comes to visit us and to know that everything is fine with the RV’s.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6060" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2266-300x225.jpg" alt="Down home meals.
The Whales Await

We turned our clocks ahead one hour last night because we will be entering southern Baja today which is in the Mountain Time Zone. A shorter sleep yet everyone was ready earlier than usual this morning. Also, decamping is quicker when boon docking.

The wind blew through the night and still this morning but the skies are clear and sunny which means it will be hot.

The drive to Guerrero Negro went well with very light traffic. The cacti forests ( Boojums, Cardon, and Elephant trees) were impressive with the century plant in full bloom.

Guerrero Negro (Black Warrior) was named after an old American whaling ship that grounded in the lagoon near the coast in 1858. The lagoon has vast tidal flats full of salt which makes this area the worlds number one salt producer. The salt is shipped to US, Canada, Mexico and Japan.

Guerrero Negro is best known to travelers as a place to view the Grey Whales. It is in Scammon’s Lagoon that the pregnant grey whales along with the single females gather. After the calves are born the young males come into the lagoons to seek out female companions.

There are three primary birthing lagoons in Baja but as I chat with other tour guides in the other lagoons they all respect the Scammon’s Lagoon.

These whales travel between feeding and breeding grounds every year. They leave the waters off Alaska in October and arrive into the warm lagoons of Baja by early January. The whales that are not using the lagoons spend their time around Baja. They are seen often in the Sea of Cortez.

Years ago when Dom & I traveled in Baja we had our favorite place to sit on the beach at Todos Santos watching whales. The whales came to rub themselves on the sand bank just off the shore.

We arrived to Malarrimo Hotel and RV Park in Guerrero Negro for a late taco lunch at Tony’s one of our favorite taco stands. Some of us walked while a couple road in the van with Dom. After lunch we walked a bit further to the grocery store to shop for the next 4 days including a potluck meal on the beach.

Back at the Park everyone had a quiet afternoon then we all met for a happy hour and dinner at Malarrimo’s Restaurant.

The back office at Mallarimos beckons.

The meals were done well and the waiters were attentive. Later on, couples went for an evening stroll. A good day.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6069" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2277-300x225.jpg" alt="Where IS that camera? You’ll never know!

This morning, eight of the group members are on the whale tour. The morning is calm, warm and sunny. The whale watching tour has never been a disappointment.

I don’t go everytime but last March I had an incredible tour where the whales rolled and bobbed their big heads out out of the water within touching distance; we all stroked them. An excitement and connection I can’t describe. It was an honor to be with these great animals.

Meanwhile Harold & Carol, and Stuart & Liz from Vancouver who did not go on those whale watching because they have been on other whale tours back home. Instead they went on their own excursion about town and found shells to share with the group.

The group returned around noon fully satisfied with their whale watching tour; Linda cried as she stroked the baby whale, Mike said he would go again, George said it was the best whale tour and best value.

Date Palm Oasis

We had a later departure today because of the whale watching tour this morning. Todays shorter journey took us from the Pacific Ocean to the middle of the desert to San Ignacio a date palm oasis.

The highway was in good condition with lots of big rig traffic. The weather was hot and windy. On route we came across a vehicle on fire on the the side of the road. The police had just arrived and it was pretty evident that the fire just started; the interior of the cab of the truck was burning. The police stopped the traffic and we all sat and watched the truck burn until the police felt it was safe for us move passed it. We are not sure what happened but the delivery trucks small load was on the ground and stuff was still burning on its flat bed.

We arrived to Rice & Beans Hotel and RV Park at 4 pm, slightly later than normal due to vehicle fire. The sky was dark over San Ignacio as if to rain but it held off and passed over. We had a nice tour around town; the Zocola, the mission church, the museum was closed but worth a look through when it is open, and we had a walk a-bout town. Some of the group bought ice cream cones, and others bought home baked date cakes and pie. Dom drove us around the town where signs of Odile’s damage are still visible but certainly some clean up has happened.

The magnificent mission church of San Ignacio built by the Dominican missionary Juan Gomez in 1786 and later served as a base for the Jesuits missionaries. The church is built of lava rock and has walls four feet thick. It was restored in 1986 and is used by the local community for masses, weddings, funerals and daily worship. It is one of the most impressive of the Baja missions.

The date palms were introduced to Baja by the Jesuit missionaries around 1765. Date palms are found in several oasis in Baja with the largest stands of date palms are in San Ignacio and Mulege where they are the principal agricultural resource.

Dates are very nutritious, providing calcium, phosphorous, iron, vitamin A, niacin, and ascorbic acid but they are also high calories and carbohydrates. These dates are exported to mainland Mexico.

Back at the RV Park we all went to Rice & Beans Restaurant for margueritas- the best in Baja, and had our meal there as well. Everyone was happy with their meals and the marguerites.

happy family!

Beach camping at the Sea of Cortez

Playa Santispac at Bahia Concepcion is our destination today. The beaches here are are very popular and offer warm, calm, and shallow water; good for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing compared to the beaches at the pacific side which offer a big surf for surfing, fishing and whale watching although whales are often spotted in the Sea of cortez as well.

We had some rain on route today just before passing through Santa Rosalia where we stopped for a short break to walk along the beach.

Got sand?

Shortly after our fuel stop in Mulege we arrived to Playa Santispac for 2 nights beach camping. Their was plenty of room for us to arrange the RV’s as we wanted. After lunch Dom readied the kayaks for a go around the bay. Stuart and Carl also brought their kayaks and couldn’t wait to get out on the water.

Carl’s ultralight deckless kayak trumps my convertible SUP: it weighs 17 lbs!!!

I went for a walk with Mike & Linda and the dogs. On our return we joined the rest of the group in relax mode.

Captain Highliner and Mike do fish whispering.

Evening arrived and a valentine party was brewing at the beach palapa. Stuart & Liz, and Harold & carol went for a meal and to dance to live music. The rest of sat and visited until it rained and we all retreated for a late supper.

It rained on and off through the night, which made for a soothing nights sleep.

We all woke up to catch the tamale wagon. Tamale’s for breakfast, yum, yum. Carl saved his for lunch.

The water was silky smooth and overcast skies were threatening rain sometime today. Dom & I headed out in the kayak and enjoyed a good paddle around the islands looking at birds and fish; a great blue heron let us get very close to it before it took flight and the many colored fish were mesmerizing as they scooted around the shoreline.

Mike and Harold found a good spot on the shoreline to stand and fish. They threw everything back but enjoyed their time anyway.

George has never kayaked before but couldn’t resist giving it a try.

The morning remained mostly overcast with periods of hot sun then around lunch it rained which gave a good opportunity to go in for lunch and work on our potluck meals.

After the rain stopped Stuart and Liz headed up one of the mountains for a hike while others puttered and started putting the kayaks away. The sun is shining as Stuart and Liz returned with comments of the terrific view of the bay and islands.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6089" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2324-300x225.jpg" alt="Stuart? Liz? are you up there somewhere?

Everyone met for happy hour which progressed into our potluck meal. Bruce & Marion, friends of Baja Amigos, joined us for for the evening. They brought the wood and built the fire which went on until a couple disappeared, then another couple disappeared and then at 9:49 pm the rest of us said goodnight and went to bed. It was a late night considering Baja midnight is at 8 pm.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6090" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2327-300x225.jpg" alt="Empty tables? not for long.

The New Baja Amigos meet for the first time.

Dom & I usually spend a couple of days in El Cajon, San Diego area between tours to ready ourselves for our next tour; car maintenance, laundry, grocery shopping and a little bit of down time. Oak Creek RV Resort is always clean and friendly with pools that are a treat. It feels like coming home.

We arrived to Potrero County Park to spend 2 nights; the Park is not far from Tecate, the border crossing we use.

The park is large and beautiful and the group is assembling. Dom & I walked around to introduce ourselves and have a short visit with each one. Everyone is excited to go to Baja and so are we. Grady has 2 playmates on this tour; a golden doodle and a schnauzer puppy.

Grady says hello to the new dogs: Sophie and Stitch.

The border business went quickly and everyone returned to the Park with plenty free time to enjoy the hot weather and the beautiful surroundings before gathering at our place for their rendez-vous reception (briefing & orientation).

Rendezvous, anyone?

At 2:30 everyone arrived with their chairs and started visiting together as Dom served chilled beer and wine. Once the table was set with a variety of tasty finger foods every one dug in. The briefing and orientation progressed nicely as we sipped, munched and got to know each other. Just about everyone bought t-shirts and hats and we all laughed about having uniforms.

First day driving in Mexico

At 8:20 the group convened in the sunniest spot to have our pre-driving meeting as we will be doing before every driving; we review the day including road conditions, distance, campground information, excursions and eating out options.

Everyone fell into driving order and we were off to Tecate our border crossing. Every RV was boarded for an inspection and a few questions. About half an hour later we are all moving through Tecate which was a schnozzle due to construction but we found our way through it and maneuvered out of the city and got up to almost highway speed; we drive at 80 km per hour with the caravan. It felt good to be on our way and the anxiety of the border patrols and the first Mexican city out of the way. Our first body break is always interesting as we hear the first comments and impressions of Baja, Mexico.

The highways change from 4 lane to 2 lane with shoulders to 2 lane with no shoulders to hill climbing and decants which is a good sampling of what we will be traveling on throughout Baja.

We travelled the wine route which is very scenic with numerous vineyards and olive orchards. Along the way I pointed out: the winery we will be touring and tasting wines, and our cute little campground we will be staying in on our journey back.

Ensenada loomed in the mist ahead as we neared the Pacific Ocean. Ensenada is the third largest city in Baja and is locally referred to as The Cinderella of the Pacific. It is an important commercial and fishing port as well as a cruise ship stop.

A cruise ship was in but we didn’t see the crowds of tourists that we normally would with a cruise ship in the harbor. We drove the malecon which is impressive with the pounding surf on our right and the city on our left. Thankfully due to road construction many of the lighted intersections were manned by flagmen so we got through much quicker with fewer lights for us to be stopped at. Flag men tend to wave the whole caravan through.

We stopped at Costco, parked in their parking lot while the group shopped at Costco and the huge Mexican grocery store across the street. We spent an hour and a half here to grocery shop, do banking and have lunch.

We left Costco and continued on the highway and exited to Punta Banda with a stop to fuel up before arriving at our stop for the day, a beach campground Punta Banda.

We pulled into Villarino RV Park, set up and met at the van a half hour later for an excursion to La Bufadora (blow hole). A fog set in and the tide was high so La Bufadora performed well for us. After being sprayed and photos taken we walked and looked along the Mexican stalls. Some of us bought stuff and we definitely enjoyed the churros.

Back at the RV Park a few of us walked the beach before sunset.

Travel day 17 and we are leaving Cabo, turning the corner and heading north along the Pacific Ocean to Los Cerritos Surf Colony for one night.

On the way we stopped at the Blanket Factory, an excellent location to buy authentic textiles made by a Mexican family. Blankets, tablecloths, ponchos, hammocks, purses, hoods and rugs in several color combinations all nicely displayed. Efrain and Vivianne are a young couple who run the shop with Efrain’s mother. Upon our arrival we were treated to warm freshly baked buns, an old family recipe. We all enjoyed the buns as we shopped; everyone bought something. A couple of the guys walked out with bags of goods as big as them, well almost.

ANOTHER bag?

At the Surf Club we dry camped in the parking lot but had access to their wi-fi, restaurant, pool and hot tub. The beach is right there as well where we walked and watched the surfers and boogie boarders waiting for the perfect wave to ride in or out. The ladies walked and picked shells and drift wood.

That evening we went out for dinner to Pescadero, a small rural village just south of Todos Santos and north of the surf club. It is surrounded by fields of aromatic basil and cherry tomatoes.

We dined at Las Pasaditas a truly Mexican back street patio restaurant owned by Jose. Jose and his family cook up a varied selection of food including hotdogs, hamburgers, tortas, papas rellenos, tacos, burritos and much more. No one was disappointed with their meal.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-5988" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_1866-300x225.jpg" alt="It could be good? It was!

Travel Day 18, to La Paz ( The Peace) for 3 nights but first we had a 3 hour excursion in Todos Santos, just 1/2 hour north. We have a place right in town to park all the rigs while we have a walking tour of Todos Santos; shopping, eating and visiting the sights such as; Hotel California, the cultural Center & Museum, and the Mission.

Let the negotiations begin…

Todos Santos, meaning “All Saints” is a quaint artist community thriving alongside ordinary Mexican life. It is abundant with wonderful shops, art galleries and good restaurants.

For Dom & I, this has always been one of our favorite stops in Baja; years ago we used to camp in town in a small campground that is not set up for caravans.

After 3 hours well spent we met at the Rv’s and continued our journey to La Paz.

Hotel Yeneka, or “do you have a any strange stuff around here?”

After a fuel stop at the south end of La Paz we proceeded with ease through the city to Walmart to get a few provision and have lunch. This is an ice cream group and I guess even Walmart ice-cream hits the spot.

The Smith computer.

All together under the pearl.

Around 3 pm we drove through the gates of Campestre Maranatha RV Park, a lovely place to be for 3 nights. This is another overlap stop for both Baja Amigo groups. Dan & Lisa greeted us and once we were set up the groups got together for happy hour in the middle of the camping area. It rained but we soon remedied that; everyone brought out the beach umbrellas which worked well. Later we moved under cover to the pool area once the children’s group had left.

Did I tell you about the time……

Campestre Maranatha is a large full service park, also used for children’s camps. Originally the area was a runway for Cindy’s parents who were missionaries.

La Paz is an important regional commercial center with a population around 250,000 which includes surrounding towns. La Paz was known for its black pearls and was always a port. Near by Pichilingue is now the main port and ferry terminal with daily sailings to Topolobampo and Mazatlan on mainland Mexico. In 2007 Dom & I sailed to Topolobampo with our camper van.

The ferry to Mainland.

The next morning we gathered the group and headed out on an excursion to Ibarra’s Pottery where Vicky met us and introduced the group to the shop and explained the pottery process. Vicky’s father recently passed away and for Dom & I it was sad not to see him sitting at his pottery wheel. Mama does painting and creates interesting patterns, also the son paints patterns on the pottery. Many items were bought and Dom & I always buy a piece or two.

Afterwards we went to the Panteon Overlook which offers a great view of La Paz and the cementario (cemetery) which from the view point looks like a condo complex. We usually let the group figure out what it is. On thee way back to the RV Park we drove along the Malecon then stopped at a big mexican grocery store for a quick grab of something and a look see.

Back at the RV Park we had lunch and a quiet time then all the guys headed out for a walk in the neighborhood to a used parts yard while the ladies sat and visited and learned the Australian national anthem because today was Australian day. We celebrated the day with our Australian group members. Christine sang the song while the group sang the chorus.

Christine was the only one to go into the pool. With the cool weather, the others didn’t try it.

We all sat together and visited until dark.

Day 20, our third day in La Paz finds us gathered at the van at 10 am. for an excursion into town. The group got off at the Madero Market. They walked and toured the cathedral, the gallery, cultural center, Hotel Yeneka which is a very unique place which is a museum of all kinds of collectables. The Perla Hotel on the Malecon s a lovely spot for a meal. doom & I had coffee there but on this occasion there was a cool breeze coming off the water so not as cosy as it normally is.

After their walk about and a bite to eat the group met Dom & I on the Malecon for a photo at the newest statue, an oyster shell with a pearl. We spotted a few of the guys eating ice-cream cones. Neil, George & Cliff can sniff out an ice-cream shop anywhere.

Back at the RV Park we all spent a quiet couple of hours then all 12 of us went out for an evening meal to Los Magueyes Restaurant. An authentic Mexican experience with a varied menu. A man sang and played guitar for us, as we dined and visited. We had fun time together.

Travel Day 21, started with fresh cinnamon buns from the local cafe. Everyone was ready for their long driving day.Today our journey took us inland through Cuidad Constitucion and Cuidad Insurgentes and back again to the Sea of Cortes.

The highway north of La Paz was still under construction but not quite as rough as it was when we travelled south. The day went well; the weather was nice and the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range was very scenic as we wound are way down the winding slopes to our destination for the night.

Puerto Escondido bordered by the rugged mountain range is a lovely place where RV’s meet sail boats and yachts. We spent the night in the parking lot of the Marina restaurant. The restaurant wasn’t opened because the new owner will not be ready for business until February so our next tour should find the restaurant open for business. The convenience store had whatever the group wanted. Dare I say ice-cream cones?

What a sunrise!

Cliff & Bev took their chairs to the dock and sat and relaxed as they looked over the bay at all the boats. Later everyone went for a walk and after that we sat and visited until sunset. After supper Dom & I went walking with our flashlight, shone it into the water and watched the several kinds of fish; some came to the light while others swam away, others splashed and seemed to be playing.

Puerto Escondido. Watching the boats at the bay.

Travel Day 22, found most of us up really early watching the sun rise with our cameras. I find this one of the most impressive sunrises. The sun rises over the bay turning shades of magenta, red, orange and yellow. As it rises it reflects on the rock wall opposite the marina lighting it to an equally stunning site.

A much shorter driving day took us to Mulege. We stopped for a photo at the top of the hill just after leaving Puerto Escondido; from here a panoramic view of the numerous islands in Loreto Bay make a breathtaking view. Today was overcast so the view wasn’t as lovely as it is on a sunny morning.

We passed by Loreto, and all the beaches along Bahia Concepcion on our way to Mulege a date palm oasis. The sun was trying to shine but mostly, the day is overcast.

We arrived to Hotel Serenidad RV Park where we spent 2 nights. The Rv Park has full hookups, a pool and restaurant. We had access to the hotel lobby and restaurant for lounging, visiting and wi-fi-ing.

After setting camp and having lunch the group met at the van for a visit to the Mission, a walk about town, a look through the shops, and some did banking and bought a few groceries. On the way back we drove through a normally cute little area where Dom & I know people. Over the last few years the area has been very damaged by hurricanes with some of the homes completely gone.

Lots of work has been done in the clean up of Mulege but we still saw areas waiting to be cleaned up.

Can’t get to the lighthouse, no matter how fast we drove!

Mulege sits at the mouth of the Mulege River so water devastation happens quickly and easily with the hurricanes and tropical storms.

Norman shows the Aussie way to a womans heart

Our Australian travelers Norman & Christine are leaving the tour at this point to make a bee line back to the United States to prepare for a flight to Mexico City for another tour. Too bad their itinerary overlapped because we all enjoyed their company and they also didn’t want to leave us.

Somewhere along the way Norman realized that Christine and I appeared every morning with similar outfits on which made us look like twin sisters because we are both brunettes and the same size. We were happy to be sisters; Christine said she always wanted a sister.

Arrrrr Matey, thems good Margueritas!

We sipped marguerites with Christine and Norm the night before their departure. Also the group went out for a meal together at a restaurant in town. We had a really nice time together and said our goodbyes to Norman & Christine.

The overcast sky turned into rain during the night and rained on and off for our next day here.

The next morning the group gathered at the van for an excursion including; a drive through the storm damaged Mulege, a look at the Lighthouse because we can no longer get to it to climb to the top of it for an impressive view of the town, a walk around the ruins of the Loma Linda Hotel which has an interesting story but not much information available. Everyone enjoyed rummaging through and taking photos. We found the Prison Museum open and had a thorough tour of the prison which never had cell doors. After the prison tour some of us walked back and met everyone for lunch and then a short walk around.

Back at the Park we discovered the water was off in the RV Park and it only came back on the morning we left. There were onsite toilets and showers available for the campers however

Well, George, what do you think about on the john?

.

Rudy, Fae, George, Bev, Neil, and Marilyn spent the early evening playing dominos while Dom & I had a nice visit with Cliff & Bev in the lobby.

I think it was an early night for all. Tomorrow is a travel day.

In the bar at Loma Linda.

Travel Day 24 and we are off to Guerrero Negro where we stopped on our way south to see whales. This time we will be staying at a different RV Park.

Our drive today was a longish one with narrow roads which was tiring for the drivers. On the way we had body breaks and a lunch break. Everyone enjoyed tacos from the taco stand on the roadside near our fuel stop.

So many sunsets. so little time.

We arrived to Mario’s RV Park and Restaurant about 3 pm but we will pass into Pacific time zone outside of the Park tomorrow morning. We turned our clocks back one hour when we arrived which gave us a longer afternoon to unwind and spend as we wished. The ladies spent hours picking through the piles of scallop shells at the back of the parking lot then we washed and cleaned our selections. These shells are the size of small plates and beautifully colored in shades of purple, orange and yellow.

Supper at Mario’s palapa.

For our evening meal we all dined at Mario’s Restaurant, a large enclosed palapa with crushed shell floors. The menu is varied with mostly seafood dishes but still a good choice of other foods.

The night was very cool, we hope for warmth later today.

Travel Day 25, the sun is shining and we all hope for warmer weather and no more rain.

We had a shorter driving day as we made our way to Bahia de Los Angeles (Bay of Angels) on the Sea of Cortes, another beach for us to camp on. There were narrow 2 lane highways again today with lots of semi’s. It is always a tight squeeze for the big A class RV but slowing down and taking care works well.

The drive across to Bahia de Los Angeles was quiet as we drove through the beautiful cacti forest.

We dry camped at Daggetts RV Park just a stone throw to the beach. This the first time here with Baja Amigos as our usual campsite was destroyed by the hurricane Odile. There were signs as we neared the Bay where the rains running from the mountains made its way down to the small town and area. So much damage!

Our stay here was a nice one.

After arrival Dom took the group for a drive of the town and a overlook for a photo, and a stop at one of the grocery stores. I walked over to our friends Antonio and Betty to invite them for a happy hour visit with the group.

Wings over paradise!

Back at the Park nearly everyone went walking on the beach and of course more shell picking. There is definitely great pleasure in picking shells, it’s therapeutic in a way. George enjoys finding rocks which is the same thing.

The locals invited all of us to a Super Bowl Pizza Party but we much preferred to walk on the beach and spend our evening quietly.

The moon was full during our two nights here. Dom & I sat out and stared at the glistening sea talking and thinking about the tour so far and its nearing finish. This is a really nice group who get along and enjoy each others company. We are having fun and we laugh a lot.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-5976" src="https://bajaamigos.xyz/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/IMG_2076-300x225.jpg" alt="Daggets. A great place for the mini firepit to come out.

Our second day here, Dom & I were up early as usual and walked in the sunrise.

Cliff met us on the beach and told us that he and Bev are going to leave this morning because his stomach is bothering him and he feels like driving today, tomorrow he may not not feel like driving. They said they may be waiting for us at our next stop. We said goodbye and hoped to see them again.

The morning was warm and sunny, I sat out with my tea and spotted whales in the bay playing; spouting water and breaching.

The excursion this morning included a visit to the Museum a very interesting stop, Casa Diez, a small chapel built of onyx, a memorial to a once standing larger church built of onyx but was destroyed in a dispute. We visited Lucy’s Gallery where a few of us bought something nice.

After this nice outing we returned to the Park for lunch and a leisurely afternoon on the beach. The wind came up but at least it was not raining. I walked to t he lighthouse, a goodly walk which took me an hour.

Diaz chapel of onyx

Rudy & Fae invited the group to join them for a Hobo’s Meal, a meal in foil cooked on the barbecue. The rest of us added to it with salads, dessert, etc. The little propane fire was at the center of another nice get together. We could have a real fire but the wind would have made it unpleasant. In the end the wind died off and it was a another lovely Baja evening.

Travel Day 27, another lovely sunrise in paradise. Rudy and Fae were on the beach early with me watching the sunrise, the birds and the fish. Fae always has her camera with her, ready for whatever.

An early start to our longest driving day will take us back to the Pacific to Colonia Vicente Guerrero, a biggish city named after a leading revolutionary general of the Mexican War of Independence.

The weather was warm and sunny. On our northward trip the sun is behind us making the journey feel like a new one even though it is the same highway.

We had several stops along the way to break up the drive. Our body breaks are planned to get you out of the drivers seat and eyes off the road for about 10 to 15 minutes.

We arrived to Baja Fiesta Restaurant where we dry camped in the large parking lot at the back of the restaurant.

Cecelia the restaurant owner lets travelers stay when they eat there. On one occasion a couple of Baja Amigo travelers were thankful for such a place to safely stay while waiting for a part to fix their RV. This is just another one of Baja Amigos ways to introduce you to all sides of Baja adventuring; safe places and resourceful people along the way.

We arrived before 4 pm leaving plenty of time to catch up with e-mails, rest, but for Rudy & George a tire needed their attention. They changed one of Georges RV tires.

So, there’s this rubber thing under here.

The group enjoyed a hosted evening meal. The meals were tasty and ample, some asked for doggy bags.

*

Travel Day 28, our last full day in Mexico. We woke up to a thick fog.

George joked about cutting the fog with a knife and somebody fell out of it. The locals said it would burn off.

Cecelia also offered an early breakfast for us before we left. Six of us enjoyed pancakes, eggs and bacon with coffee.

It was foggy for awhile as we drove and at the north end of the city we came across an accident which happened much earlier because the ambulance already came and left and the police were sorting out the rest. We had to squeeze around their road block.

Eventually the fog burned off and we enjoyed the rest of our journey to Valle de Guadalupe, passing through Ensenada and onto the wine valley to Rancho Sordo Mudo our stop for the night. This pretty little campground is surrounded by vineyards and orange trees line the RV sites. The park offers electrical hookups and a dump site but if anyone needs water they can go across the highway to the school to get water in their RV.

We arrived just before 1pm, set up and had lunch before Dom took us off to LA Cetto, one of the most renowned and oldest wineries in Mexico. It is responsible for more than half of the countries wine. The wine tour was informative and we also enjoyed the gardens and the huge wooden barrels full flowers that are placed here and there and tucked beside the huge tanks of wine.

It turned out that the young man, Edwardo that gave us the tour was a university friend of the son of our friend Antonio and Betty in Bahia de Los Angeles.

All together, one more time.

Two couples tried a tasting and bought a couple bottles of wine and a few bought bottles of olive oil.

Back at the RV Park, we organized a pot luck meal and a fire pit for our last evening together. The afternoon was spent resting and or preparing our food from whatever was left over in our fridges that we cannot cross the border with.

We set the picnic table with a table cloth and laid out the food. Marilyn & Neil barbecued chicken thighs perfectly and the rest of us made salad, a baked rice dish, a baked bean dish, and Fae’s famous cookies.

OK then, one more time.

Doug the schools representative came by to tell us about Rancho Sordo Mudo. It is a Christian based residential school for deaf children in Mexico. The founders, Ed and Margaret Everett believed that deaf children did not have to become beggars on the street and taught them how to read and write and communicate with sign language. Doug related success stories of the children that went on to have good jobs. Camping fees are donations to the school. We have had group members donate clothing and money. The campground is in need of someone to come and volunteer any amount of time. The campground needs repairs to make it a better place for travelers which ultimately benefits the school.

Sordo Mudo campground.

Travel Day 29, a bright sunny morning and a time for goodbyes. Our friends Rudy & Fae, and George, our affable Huck Finn & Bev, from Missouri are leaving the tour to back track to Ensenada and go east to San Filipe on the Sea of Cortes to visit family for a couple of days.

The tour continued with Neil & Marilyn, for the short drive to Tecate, the border crossing. When we arrived at the border there were no vehicles so we drove straight to the gate and after a couple of questions and a look at our passports we were sent on our way with no inspections.

Another wonderful adventure with wonderful people in a wonderful country came to an end. A heartfelt thank you to all of the crew who came together as strangers and left as friends: Adios muchachos, hasta la vista. Until we meet again!

The road is calling, better answer it.
